La Grange   Soup   Kitchen

There are multiple reasons to consider participating in some aspect of the St. Isaac Jogues  soup kitchen ministry; some reasons may be obvious and some not readily apparent.  Each of us has a personal, internal reason for accepting the invitation to get involved. Whatever that reason, your motivation will change once you are engaged in the activities of the ministry.

  1. The ministry offers us an opportunity to help and care for people in our community who are not as fortunate at this point in their lives as we are. This can be a learning experience for us and our family members if we have had limited exposure to those who are unable to adequately provide for themselves and their families.
  2. The ministry offers opportunities for discipleship with both guests and other volunteers.  Volunteers participate as members of teams who share the many tasks involved  in cooking a large meal, serving it, and cleaning up, achieving results none of us could accomplish on our own.  What can otherwise seem to be mindless and mundane chores become more engaging and fulfilling when performed as part of a group of friendly, caring, and motivated people.  In such a setting, volunteers experience a unique sense of purpose, satisfaction, and joy.
  3. By engaging in this interfaith ministry, we give witness to the guests and other volunteers of our willingness as Catholics and members of St. Isaac Jogues Parish to live out the Gospel call to love our neighbor and feed the hungry.
  4. Volunteering in the soup kitchen ministry can be infectious, extending to family and friends, and taking hold of us in ways that are unanticipated and potentially life-changing.

What We Do and How We Need Your Help!
  1. VOLUNTEERS MAKE SOUP.  Every Monday, volunteers from SIJ and other churches spend the morning making soup in the basement kitchen at the Union Church in Hinsdale.  The soup is prepared with fresh ingredients and is designed so that each serving provides a hearty and nutritious meal.  The volunteer crew prepares three large pots of soup.  Two pots are served every Tuesday at a weekly soup kitchen at San Luca Church in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago.  The third pot of soup is served every Saturday at a weekly soup kitchen at the First Congregational Church in LaGrange.
  2. DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS.  Volunteers from the Union Church, SIJ, and St. John of the Cross Parish in Western Springs deliver soup on Tuesday mornings to San Luca, a storefront mission church sponsored by the Union Church.  Two volunteers are needed every Tuesday.  After delivering the soup to San Luca, the volunteers help serve the soup at lunch. The time involved tends to run from about 9am to 2pm.
  3. SOUP KITCHEN VOLUNTEERS.  The LaGrange Soup Kitchen is staffed by a group of volunteers from various churches and coordinated by a team from St. John of the Cross.  The soup kitchen provides hot meals for breakfast and lunch every Saturday. Volunteers from SIJ prepare and serve lunch one Saturday a month. About eight to ten volunteers are needed from SIJ every month. Each volunteer is asked to help for about two hours. On a second Saturday every month, SIJ purchases the food used to serve lunch at the LaGrange Soup Kitchen.  We need volunteers to shop for the food and deliver it on Saturday morning to the soup kitchen.
  4. FUNDING.  SIJ helps fund the food kitchens, sharing with other churches the cost of purchasing the ingredients for the soup and the food served at the soup kitchen. SIJ’s share is funded by the SIJ Mercy Fund.  Donations to the Mercy Fund can be made using (a) the Poor Box at church: (b) the purple monthly envelope mailed to SIJ parishioners; or (c) e-giving online at the SIJ website (www.sij.net).
