School Day Procedures
Release of Students
Student safety is a paramount concern. Students are
not permitted to leave the school campus alone – at
any time – during school hours. No child will be
released to the custody of any person other than a
parent or guardian of record unless detailed previous
arrangements have been made with the school office.
Half Days and Early Dismissal
On designated half-days, students (including morning-
session kindergartners) are dismissed at 11:30 a.m.
Bus service is provided at that time.
Medication
Prescription medication may be dispensed by authorized
Saint Isaac Jogues staff. Medication must be in the
original container, with a physician’s written directive.
State law prohibits our staff from dispensing over-the-
counter (non-prescription) medications.
Emergency Contact Information
Accurate contact information is vital. Parents should
update their emergency cards – maintained in the school
office – whenever a change occurs.
Lunch and Recess
Lunch period is 11:30 a.m. to noon for grades 1-4;
12:20 to 12:50 p.m. for grades 5-8. Each lunch period
includes a recess. These are supervised activities.
Students are expected to follow lunchroom and
playground rules. A parent may deliver a home-made
lunch to school, but it should be marked with child’s
name and homeroom number. (Please do not bring
fast-food lunches to the school.) Milk ($25 per child)
and hot lunch fees may be paid on an annual basis.
Saint Isaac Jogues discourages and cannot approve
students leaving the school grounds for lunch, except
with a parent. A written note from a parent or guardian
is required for any child leaving the school for lunch.
Visitors
For safety reasons, anyone entering the school for any
reason – including parents visiting a teacher or child –
must first report to the office. Anyone found in the
building without permission is subject to prosecution
under the school code of city ordinances. This check-in
policy is waived for various school activities when
parents are notified in advance and encouraged to attend.
Volunteers
Volunteers who will have contact with students must
first complete a diocesan program – “Protecting God’s
Children” – and submit personal information for a
background check. Please contact the office for more
information.
Telephone Usage
Students will not be called to the phone during school
hours, nor can they use the office phone to call home
about forgotten items, transportation arrangements,
etc. Cell phones must be turned off and left in lockers
during the school day. Emergency messages will be
relayed by teachers.
Emergency Closing
To check on school cancellations due to inclement
weather, parents may simply go this web site.
Notification will be posted. In addition, major radio
stations will be notified. Parents also are given a
phone number to check on school status. With all of
these information outlets, we ask that parents not call
the school. For closing information. (This can interfere
with incoming emergency calls.) If severe weather
occurs during a school day, or an emergency arises,
students will not be dismissed until an all-clear signal
has been received.
Homework
A reasonable amount of homework will be assigned
according to grade level. It is the responsibility of
parents to monitor their children’s homework. Each
student should have a book bag for school books that
will be brought home. When a child is absent,
homework assignments may be picked up in the school
office at the end of the day or sent home with a sibling
or classmate. (Please do not interrupt a class to pick up
homework.)
Vacations
Teachers cannot be responsible for assigning school
work – in advance – that will be missed due to a family
vacation. Missed work must be completed by the student
when he or she returns to school.
Supplies and Lockers
Parents are provided a supply list at the start of the year.
Students are expected to have all their supplies on
opening day. Each student is assigned his or her own
locker with built-in combination lock. No personal locks
are allowed on classroom lockers.
Textbooks
Textbooks will be waiting for your children – at their
desks – on the first day of classes. These valuable
textbooks are considered school property. They are
“on loan” to our students for the academic year. So we
ask that they be treated with the respect and care all
books deserve.
Lost and Found
A lost and found area is located in the East Hall.
Students may check there for missing items. At the
each school quarter, unclaimed items are donated to
charity.
Please note: all school items and clothing should be
labeled.
