Chess:
For grades K through 8

At a time when video games so dominate our culture, the ancient game of chess retains its unique allure. This intellectually stimulating game is accessible and rewarding for players of almost any age or skill level – and our chess club reflects this. The club is
open to students from kindergarten to eighth grade, whether they are beginners or budding experts.

With patient instruction and coaching, players learn how to start and play a game, how to use chess notation, basic strategies, positional techniques and maneuvers, and endgame tactics.

For students in Kindergarten, we recommend that a parent stay until their child is comfortable. For all other students, we recommend that one parent from each player’s family attend at least one session during the 14 weeks to assist in attending to the students. We encourage all parents to attend a ten-minute class
overview provided at our first session.

Our club provides a friendly environment where players can match their skills and improve their game against other players of similar strengths. Above all, the goal is to have fun!

Chess club meets Monday evenings, from October
through March, totaling 14 sessions.
